I was pretty confident when launching the first official platform engineering course. I get asked so many questions, and have so many conversations on platform engineering, I was pretty sure it would have its audience.

What I was completely wrong about… was who that audience would be.

I’d made the assumption that it would overwhelmingly be DevOps and SRE folks who wanted to transition into PE. I was totally wrong.

90% of people who attend these courses are experienced platform engineers, many joining with their entire team (or department). Almost 20% of attendees are Heads of Platform engineering departments - or people leading their second platform team.

People who have been told “Hey, you are in (or lead) a Platform team now. Go build one”, who’ve received budget and mandate but aren’t quite sure what to do, or just want to make sure their assumptions are right.

Almost the minute group 1 finished in September, half a dozen people reached out asking us to run the course for their entire department.

“Even if we just have the entire team giving the same definition for platform engineering. It’ll be a success”.
